Dan Santos, a member of the
class of 2003, found his way to medicine after taking a
couple of years after college to pursue research. Now,
as a medical student, he continues his interest in research
working with Dr. Richard Costanzo, professor of physiology,
in the area of smell and taste.
Santos’ appreciation for his education is reflected
in his dedication to the school, first as a tour guide, and
now as a member of the School of Medicine Admissions Committee.
“I have been struck by the student-oriented nature
of the MCV Campus faculty and administration,” Santo
said. “They really listen to the students in order
to improve our education. I have received an outstanding
medical education and to top it off with the Moore scholarship
is humbling. I am deeply grateful.”
Santos received a scholarship from Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Moore.
The Moores bequeathed $1.8 million to the School of Medicine,
specifying that half of their gift be used for medical research
and the other half for student scholarships.
“What I have come to realize is that those who
give are bound by common ideals,” said Santos. “They believe
in altruism, the interdependence of people within society,
and the hope that from their generosity some good can come.
This gift has certainly inspired me and I hope that someday
I will be able to do the same for an aspiring doctor.”
