Spring 2005 will mark the groundbreaking
of a brand new state-of-the-science School
of Nursing building to be located on the corner of
Leigh and 11th streets, allowing the School to establish
an unparalleled
regional center for nursing. The new facility will allow
for expanded enrollment, extension of outreach, clinical
service and education, expansion of research enterprise,
and creation of facilities that employ cutting edge technologies.
According
to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the nation will need
one million new nurses to meet the escalating demands
of the aging population. This means that each nursing school
would have to increase its enrollment by 50 percent. In order
to respond to the commonwealth’s need for more nurses,
VCU will need to accommodate a larger student body and attract
more faculty members also while providing state-of-the-science
classroom and laboratory space.
With an increased number of
nurses and this unique opportunity to design a new “home” for
the school, VCU’s
School of Nursing is positioned to create partnership opportunities
with private donors to establish scholarships, professorships,
clinical outreach programs, research support and technological
advances unavailable through state funding.
