Research Simulations - How they work

Each research simulation takes place over several days, including three or four morning group meetings in the Bioinformatics Core Computer Lab (BCCL). Each focuses on a scenario and a problem set that concerns it.

Scenarios on most topics will use computer programming as a powerful tool to understand relevant concepts. Many participants will come to the course without prior programming experience. None will leave without it.

Before group meetings:

  • Go through an online scenario before the first group meeting
  • Read online notes prior to coming to each group meeting. These notes replace what would serve as lectures in a conventional course.
  • Answer a few online questions regarding the notes
  • The coordinator determines from responses what concepts are in need of attention and prepares the group experience accordingly

In group meetings:

  • Points that gave people trouble are discussed, usually through hands-on examples and exercises.
  • Problems from the current problem set are addressed in small groups, aided by faculty and teaching assistants.

Outside of group meetings:

  • Continued work on current problem set, with the help of faculty and teaching assistants.
