Consider two kinds of experiences:

Experience 1
You're sitting in a mostly filled auditorium watching a someone up front give a high-powered lecture. You are transfixed by the flow of a fascinating story told by a master storyteller.

Experience 2
You're sitting in a computer lab with eleven other people as a faculty member or teaching assistant helps your group hammer away at a particularly knotty problem.

Both approaches have their strengths and we'd like to take advantage of what each does best. Narrative lectures will be placed on the web for you to work through before the group meeting. Meeting time can then be spent on discussions of the points that most need attention and on hands-on exercises.
