Introductory Week
Introduction to Programming

Time: Thursday, 29 May, 2:00 am - 4:30 am
           Thursday, 5 June and Monday, 9 June, 9:00 am - 11:30 am
Place: Bioinformatics Computer Core Lab (Rm 104), Life Sciences Bldg
Organizer: Jeff Elhai
Audience: Primarily 1st year students

Goals of sessions

  • Give you sense of the power of programming to answer interesting questions
  • Give you an overview of BioBIKE
  • Give you experience in understanding and (to some extent) writing simple programs in BioBIKE

First session material (click on links to reach notes and other things)

  • BioBIKE: BioBIKE portal (Choose CyanoBIKE, public, VCU mirror)
  • Help: Introduction to BioBIKE Syntax
(through CyanoBIKE HELP, General Help, Basic Syntax)
  • Guided Tour: What is a gene? (through BioBIKE portal, Guided Tours)
  • Problem Set: Syntax problems

Additional material (click on links to reach notes and other things)

  • Help: Mapping and Loops
(through CyanoBIKE HELP, General Help, Basic Syntax)
  • Problem Set: Biological problems
  • Problem Set: Loop problems

Before coming to the FIRST session (Thursday, May 29)

  • Please go through the tour and the notes on General Syntax material (given above).
  • Feel free to browse anything else you like, BUT DON'T BURN YOURSELF OUT. Decide for yourself how much is useful and how much is too much.
  • Be sure to learn with your fingers at the computer more than with your eyes.
  • Note that there won't be any lecture unless you request one
  • Please complete the short Questionnaire (earlier the better but at least two hours before the session)

Before coming to the SECOND session (Thursday, June 5)

  • Please go through the notes on Mapping and Loops
Be sure to do each example in BioBIKE... don't just read!
  • Please complete the short Questionnaire (earlier the better but at least two hours before the session)
  • Please don't kill yourself. You easily could if these programming concepts are new to you.

Before coming to the THIRD session (Monday, June 9)

  • Please continue what you were doing for Thursday's session.
  • Please complete a short Questionnaire
