Introductory Week
Introduction to the Institute

Time: Friday, June 2, 9:00 am - 11:30 am
Place: Bioinformatics Computer Core Lab (Rm 104), Life Sciences Bldg
Organizer: Jeff Elhai
Audience: Primarily 1st year students
Problem Set

Goals of session

  • Give you overview of the summer's events
  • Give you a minimal competence in a wet lab (if you need a minimal competence in a wet lab)
  • Give a brief introduction to using personal programming to solve problems in molecular biology
  • Determine with whom you're going to be working this summer

Outline of session

  • ~8:30 (If you don't already have a VCU ID card) You've already gone to the VCUcard office in the Technology Administration Building, 701 W. Broad, having brought some form of picture ID
  • ~9:00 Breakfast, in Life Sciences atrium
  • Submit online preferences for VCU mentor in computer lab (Rm 104), if you have not done so already
  • ~9:15 Overview of Institute
  • Maybe essentials of the wet lab
  • Guided tour on personal programming and molecular biology

    Read as much of the following as you think pertinent

    The following is those who think that wet lab skills will be useful.
    Read just enough to answer the question at the end of the notes.
    If you're bored to insensibility, stop.
    We'll do the following Friday morning
  • Guided Tour:

      - Click on Help (bottom of page)
      - Click on Live Tutorials
      - Click on Genes

Please bring the following:

  • Your choices for VCU mentor
  • Apartment Dwellers Agreement Form (filled out by all co-dwellers)
