This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to issues
that emerge from the nexus of life sciences and religious traditions.
Led by instructors and speakers from Life Sciences, Human Genetics,
the Massey Cancer Center, Religious Studies, the VCU Health System
and others from outside of VCU, the course provides opportunities
for students and faculty to explore how faith traditions and the
life sciences interact.
This course will tackle questions such as:
- How do science and religious traditions
obtain knowledge, define truth and make ethical judgments?
- How do religious beliefs shape the development
and application of science and technology?
- How do science and religion shape the
articulation, establishment and interpretation of laws?
- What is and should be taught in American
schools today about science and about religions?
- What do science and religious traditions
say about the origins, nature and future of humanity?
- What do science and religious traditions
say about individual and societal rights and reproduction?
- What do science and religious traditions
say about what it means to be healthy and sustain health?
- How do science and religious traditions
understand the meaning and purpose of human existence?
