Research simulations

Experience enhances research, and so our task is to provide you with pertinent experiences as fast as possible. Research simulations are our primary tool.

Each research simulation takes place over several days

Before class:

  • You go through a scenario at your leisure before class
  • You read notes prior to coming to class. These notes replace what would serve as lectures in a conventional class.
  • You answer a few questions regarding the notes prior to class
  • The coordinator determines from your responses what concepts are in need of attention and prepares the classroom experience accordingly

In class:

  • Classes are held in the computer lab. At this time, points that gave people trouble are discussed, usually through hands-on examples and exercises.

Outside of class:

  • The mystery of the scenario is explored through problem sets. These are lifelike, often confusing problems where it's often as difficult figuring out what the question is as finding the answer (that's the most lifelike part of them).
  • Problems are tackled in groups, inside and out of class, with the aid of teaching assistants and the coordinator.
