Introduction to Programming
Time: Thursday, 28 May, 2:00 am - 4:30 am
Tuesday, 2 June, 10:30 am and perhaps other times
Place: Bioinformatics Computer Core Lab (Rm 104), Life Sciences Bldg
Organizer: Jeff Elhai
Audience: Primarily 1st year students
Goals of sessions
-
Give you sense of the power of programming to answer interesting questions
- Give you an overview of BioBIKE
- Give you experience in understanding and (to some extent) writing simple programs in BioBIKE
- If you're already comfortable programming, this Introduction is probably not for you. Come if you like, or spend the time reading articles or otherwise bettering yourself and the world
First session material, May 28 (click on links to reach notes and other things)
Before coming to the session, please use whatever resources below seem useful to you and go through at least part of the tour. DON'T BURN YOURSELF OUT. Decide for yourself how much is useful and how much is too much. Be sure to learn with your fingers at the computer more than with your eyes. There won't be any lecture unless you request one, but by all means identify where you could use help and let me know.
Second session material, June 2 (or whenever we get to it)
If you feel ready to move on to loops and mapping, fine. But if you're not comfortable with what has come before, by all means decide for yourself whether to retrench or plow forward. Either way, please fill out the questionnaire below.
Warning! There are way too many problems in the problem sets for any mortal. Do those that you judge to be most useful to you.
