Introductory Week
Markov models and their use
in identifying gene boundaries

Using models of DNA sequences

Time: Thursday, June 17, 9:00 am - noon
Place: Bioinformatics Computer Core Lab (Rm 104), Life Sciences Bldg
Organizer: Jeff Elhai
Audience: Primarily 1st year students

Goals of session

  • Figuring out how to take models of DNA sequences and use them to distinguish between coding and noncoding regions.
  • Lots of hands on manipulation of Perl code

Resources of session (click on links to reach resources)

  • Notes: None today
  • Program: Use_markov.pl - Uses Markov models to score regions of DNA sequence
  • Data: Wish for it and tell me what you wish

Before coming to the session

  • Think about what you would need to effectively distinguish coding from noncoding regions, using Markov models
  • (Work on your web sites)
  • No Questionnaire
