VCU Health System - From the CEO

With the new VCU Health System, we move from imagining how to conduct our mission more efficiently and effectively to doing it.

The VCU Health System was born of changes in modern health care. Those who are responsible for the future of the academic health mission continue to face a confounding set of corporate and federal economics that threaten our teaching hospitals and faculty practices. Nearly all our nation's academic health centers are experiencing tremendous financial stresses as a result of changes to health-care policy, like Medicare cutbacks from the Balanced Budget Act and the unrelenting payment slashing by managed care.

We have not been immune to these external pressures. The VCU Health System is our answer. It unites the entire organization in providing high-quality medical services across the continuum of care. We will no longer function as separate entities but as a single team representing a single institution, the VCU Health System. We will share not only the challenges but also the tremendous opportunities for innovation in patient care and the advancement of teaching and research in the 21st century.

Improving our situation and positioning ourselves for long-term success have required the University to plan strategically to protect our role in the greater Richmond area, the Commonwealth, and the nation. Our committed doctors and health-care professionals have gone about this most urgent goal with all due seriousness and pride in our mission. We invite you to join in our excitement as we move into a new era in the delivery of the academic health-care mission.
