Local Transportation

Alternatives to your own car
The two alternatives for travel between the two campuses are foot and shuttle bus. Parking in and about campus is such that either alternative will beat cars almost every time. Shuttle buses run every 15 minutes during the day. There is a call-up pick up service at night.

Travel to locations near campus, e.g. local eateries, are also more conveniently reached on foot. The bus system (not to be confused with the Boston IRT) can help you go somewhat further afield. It's reasonably reliable during the day and can get you most places in the city for $1.25. Frequency drops way down at night.

Practically speaking, most trips off campus, you'll want a car. But it doesn't have to be yours (who wants to go to the market alone?). Historically, students have brought more than enough cars to meet the needs of the resident population.

Public transportation to some places within Richmond and just about anywhere outside the city is very limited. Amtrak runs along the eastern corridor (Richmond, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Boston), with trains several times a day. If you want to go elsewhere, good luck! Find a friend with a car (or be that friend).

For high-volume, organized excursions, we may be able to provide a van.

Parking
Officially sanctioned parking for residents is at the Main Street Parking Structure and will cost you around $15/week. If you want to go this route, fill out the parking application (you'll need to also download the Parking Guide), and bring it to the Parking and Transportation Services office at 1111 W Broad Street (under the "i" of "Academic" in this map). They're open 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. Alternatively, some have been happy with free, nonofficial parking on the periphery of the Academic Campus (Gladding lies on one boundary).
