Alzheimer’s Disease
You are a toxicologist for a large biopharmaceutical company called AlzPharm, Inc. Your company has designed a new drug (ADPDI-1) to treat Alzheimer’s disease plaque development.

Alzheimer's disease currently strikes an estimated 4.2 million to 5.8 million Americans. It is projected that the number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease could more than triple to 16 million Americans by mid-century. Alzheimer's disease ranks as the most common cause of dementia, or loss of intellectual function, among people aged 65 and older. An estimated one in ten persons over age 65 and nearly half of those 85 or older have Alzheimer's disease. The top adjacent figure illustrates a normal PET scan of an 80 year-old brain. The next adjacent PET scan picture illustrates what happens to the brain when it has AD.
