Summer Institute
Reference Form
Please read all the way through before filling in the boxes. This is because you'll probably want to have the last questions answered first before starting with the boxes. Saving the form doesn't save what you filled in.
Sad to say, we are not in operation for Summer 2011
So this application form is non-functional

Relationship to applicant
How long have you known the applicant?
In what capacity?

We asked the applicant to identify at least one person who would act as Local Mentor (If you don't know what we're talking about, take a look at the description of the role)

Are you that person? Yes No

The main question

What information can you provide to help us determine whether the applicant and the Institute constitute a good match?

We would like to know:

  • how the student might respond to confusing problems beyond his/her current knowledge
  • how the student communicates with students and others who may have greater or lesser knowledge than they on a subject
  • how the student works with others
  • how the student might function teaching within a small group
  • how the student might respond to projects requiring sustained creative attention
  • what qualities, abilities, experience, or knowledge the student might bring to the Institute that would enhance the experience of his/her colleagues
  • how the student might benefit from the experience
  • anything else you may consider useful

If you are the designated Local Mentor, then we would also like to know:

  • Are you prepared to act in that capacity (as described) during the academic year?
  • What initial ideas (if any) do you have regarding how our joint endeavor might work

If you have any questions on the matter, please do not hesitate to call (804-828-0794) or e-mail the director of the Institute, Jeff Elhai.

Please understand that the world may not necessarily be a better place if this applicant attends the Institute, either because the student and the Institute are not really a good match or because acceptance of your student might prevent another from joining the Institute, one who might be just as nice a person but who could have gained more from the opportunity.

So as difficult as it may be, please try to respond from an Olympian perspective, trying to increase the total good in the world.
