Heart Bypass Arteries: Laboratory-Grown

Why make an artery?

Pre-made blood vessels could save precious time in emergency surgeries. Because these artificial arteries are able to grow after implantation, another important use will be in pediatric surgery. diabetic patients who often lose blood vessels to vascular disease. The arteries will also be important in treating patients suffering from diabetes who often lose blood vessels to disease.

Collagen electrospinning technology is not limited to the making of artificial blood vessels. Electrospinning of scaffolds can permit regeneration or replacement of muscles, skin, bone, nerves, and even allow repair of spinal cord injuries. Practical applications of the new technology could be commercially available within three years. The potential is truly exciting!
