Meeting Minutes for
January 8, 2001
A meeting of the University Information Technology
Advisory Committee was called to order at 3:07 p.m. on December
12, 2000, in the 4th floor conference room of Cabell Library. Dr.
Robert Mattauch, co-chair, presided. Members present were Dr. David
Sarrett, Dr. Judyth Twigg, Dr. Gary Tepper, Ms. Veronica Shuford,
Mr. Mark Willis, Dr. Phyllis Self, and Mr. John Ulmschneider. Members
absent were Dr. Timothy Broderick, Ms. Dianna Chinnici, Ms. Lauren
Russell, and Ms. Seema Kumar. Ms. Barbara Baldwin could not attend
the meeting but joined the group by speakerphone.
I. REVIEW OF MINUTES FROM
DECEMBER 12, 2000 MEETING
Minutes were approved as prepared.
II. DRAFT COMPUTING ETHICS
POLICY AND ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURES
Before the committee proceeded to discuss the Computing Ethics Policy,
Dr. Self distributed copies of two computer use policies that she
thought would be helpful to the committee: from the University of
Tennessee, Knoxville and a study completed by faculty at Colorado
State University.
Dr. Mattauch suggested that the committee go over the Computing
Ethics Policy paragraph by paragraph. Many changes, comments and
suggestions were discussed.
Dr. Mattauch asked Dr. Self and Mr. Willis to
review the results of the committee’s discussion and using
the University of Tennessee document as a guideline, merge the information
into a draft Computing Ethics Policy. The draft document should
be emailed to committee members so they would have time to look
it over prior to the next meeting. The goal of the committee is
to finalize it at the February 12th meeting so that it can be passed
on to the Vice Presidents for consideration.
III. DRAFT IT POLICIES,
STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES PROCESS
Since discussion of the VCU Computing Ethics Policy took up the
entire meeting time, there was no time to discuss the draft IT policies.
IV. OTHER BUSINESS
The committee was asked to think about the Student Computing Initiative
and how to get the information out to the students. It was suggested
that maybe it should be made part of a course that the students
would be required to take. Also, some universities will not issue
email accounts until the student reviews certain information and
materials.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned
at 4:25 p.m.
