Dr. Waverly M. ColeJay and Sondra Weinberg

Like many donors to Virginia Commonwealth University, Jay and “Sunny” Weinberg take an eclectic approach to their philanthropy. Ardent champions of the University Honors program and the Massey Cancer Center, the Weinbergs’ generosity and support also have made a palpable difference in the School of Business, the Stuart C. Siegel Center, the Commonwealth Society, the Bishop Walter Sullivan Chair in Catholic Studies, the Harry Lyons Chair in Judaic Studies and the Richard R. Robertson Alumni House.

In addition to their financial support, the Weinbergs also lend their leadership and time to the University. Jay Weinberg currently chairs the $1.35 million Honors Campaign, which will improve the academic quality of the program as well as add a new honors center within the Honors housing facility on the corner of West Grace and Laurel streets. He also has served as Rector on VCU’s Board of Visitors, the VCU Real Estate Foundation Board, the MCV Hospitals Authority Board and the Judaic Culture Advisory Board. In 1997, the Weinbergs established the Jay and Sondra Weinberg Undergraduate Scholarship in Honors to attract academically meritorious students to VCU. Seven years later, the Weinberg scholarship is one of the largest privately endowed funds at VCU and has provided full room, board, tuition and fees to over forty students.
