The Campaign for the College of Humanities and
Sciences
Goal: $5 million
Overview
With more than 12,000 current students majoring in 20 undergraduate
and 15 graduate degree programs, the College of Humanities and Sciences
is the largest academic unit of Virginia Commonwealth University.
The college encompasses three schools, 16 departments and programs,
as well as the central advising and tutoring center for all first
and second year undergraduate students on VCU’s Academic Campus.
Among our many notable areas of study are two nationally ranked programs — Clinical
Psychology and Creative Writing. Among our excellent faculty are
the 2002 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and a former governor of the
commonwealth of Virginia.
From forensic science to philosophy, from
English to environmental sciences, from history to chemistry … the
college is the educational continuum that brings VCU students together.
The college is charged
with preparing students for the challenges and opportunities they
will encounter as they enter their careers or graduate school.
Of course, the beauty of a degree in the humanities, social sciences
or natural and mathematical sciences is the extreme diversity and
flexibility it offers graduates in career choices. A liberal arts
and sciences education assures that students acquire the intellectual
skills and breadth of knowledge that will not only contribute to
the success of their undergraduate studies, but will prepare them
for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
Mission
The College of Humanities and Sciences is dedicated to excellence
in teaching, research and public service. The mission of Virginia
Commonwealth University provides the framework for our pursuit
of excellence.
Teaching and learning are central to the college,
and the college is central to the educational and intellectual
life of VCU. The college meets the educational needs
of a diverse
student body, provides general education for all undergraduate
students of the university, preparatory programs for the health
sciences,
engineering and law, and education in the liberal arts and sciences
for future teachers. We offer comprehensive undergraduate, graduate
and professional programs of study that link a foundation of
understanding and knowledge with skills on which students can
build careers,
become responsible citizens and continue lifelong learning.
Scholarship,
creative work and professional accomplishment are essential to
teaching and learning. We are responsible for advancing
understanding
and increasing knowledge for its own sake, for the educational
benefit of our students, and for the good of the larger community.
In
both teaching and research, the college takes seriously the responsibilities
of being part of a public,
urban university. Through service and public teaching, we
meet the challenges
and opportunities afforded by our metropolitan environment
and by our location in the capital of the commonwealth.
