The Campaign for Catholic Studies
Goal: $1 million
Catholic Studies will be a new certificate program in the School
of World Studies in the College of Humanities and Sciences.
Overview
Since 1979, the Religious Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth
University has grown from three student majors to 50 majors, with
overall enrollment in religious study courses exceeding 3,000 students
over the past three years. In addition, there is an increasing
interest within the Richmond community in academic studies related
to the
literature, thought, history and other aspects of Catholic Studies.
VCU already has a very successful Judaic Studies program, and has
added a scholar in Islamic Studies, an interdisciplinary appointment
with expertise in African-American religious expressions and a
specialist in Buddhism. A Catholic Studies program will enhance
our overall
religious studies program.
Bishop Walter F. Sullivan Chair in Catholic
Studies
VCU is joining with the Catholic Diocese of Richmond to honor Bishop
Walter Sullivan on the occasion of his retirement with the establishment
of the Bishop Walter F. Sullivan Chair in Catholic Studies at VCU.
This will be a unique tribute to a man who has served the Catholic
community for more than 30 years. The Sullivan Chair will provide
the funds needed to attract respected Catholic theologians to become
members of the university faculty and help establish Richmond as
an emerging center for Catholic study, thought and philosophy.
The implementation of a Catholic Studies program at VCU is designed
to
also foster the students' personal growth through academic study
and introspection. It is a fitting tribute to Bishop Sullivan.
Recognition
The donor and the recipient of an endowed chair or scholarship
at VCU become part of a legacy that fosters a tradition of excellence
in teaching, research and learning nurtured through the years.
Chair
holders are scholars whose talents will leave an indelible mark
on their field, their students and their colleagues. Donor, chair
and
scholarship holders are recognized each year during the VCU Foundation's
Annual Scholarship Dinner. Significant contributors also will
be recognized on a plaque to be placed in the School of World
Studies.
