Research: Comparison of expressed genes amongst pathogenic protozoan parasites

BBSI project:Identification of genes related to different life styles of kinetoplastids
Kinetoplastids are protozoa within the family Trypanosomatidae with a wide range of medical, agricultural, and veterinary importance. Trypanosoma brucei, the causative agent of sleeping sickness, is one member of this group. I am interested in determining the pattern of gene expression in kinetoplastids with similar modes of infection (e.g. by insect bite) or similar life styles (e.g. intracellular). Such a global comparative study of transcription may shed light on the mechanisms underlying particular complex behaviors.
