VCU Bioinformatics and Bioengineering Summer Institute
Introduction to Programming (Day 2)

Part I: Basic information

Your name

Part II: Programming

I would like to point out that courses on programming generally last an entire semester. By the end of that semester, you'd probably still not expect to be able to do much in the way of serious bionoformatics programming. Our crash course lasts two days. If you are able to do anything remotely meaningful by that time, you might well count it as an outstanding victory.
1. With that in mind, how do you feel about your new found skills in BioBIKE?

2. How comfortable do you feel regarding the basic syntax of BioBIKE?

3. Are you comfortable with READING BioBIKE code?

4. Are you comfortable with WRITING BioBIKE code (within the narrow range of functions you're familiar with)?

5. Are you comfortable with the basic concepts surrounding loops?

6. Are you comfortable with the mechanics of setting up loops in BioBIKE?

3. What problems from the Syntax or Loops problem sets would you like us to go over as a group?

4. What comments or concerns do you have regarding programming? Anything in particular we should go over?

Part III: Molecular Biology

1. Would you like us to continue working in groups on one or two problems from the Molecular Biology problem set? If so, which?
2. What comments or concerns do you have regarding molecular biology? Anything in particular we should go over?

Part IV: Miscellaneous

1. Take a look at your web site (People, Students, You). Do you feel comfortable downloading it and making the necessary modifications?

2. Do you have whatever software you need to modify the website?

3. (If your response to the previous question indicated the availability of software or the need for software) What program do you have in mind?

4a. An ice cube is floating on water. The ice cube melts. Does the water level:
4b. Why?

5. Comments, concerns, questions?
