The Original Title Page
of Thoreau's Walden

Before Thoreau died, he asked his publisher to omit the subtitle, "Or, Life in the Woods," perhaps because he thought his audience was taking it too literally and missing his major points.

Regarding the epigraph below the illustration on the title page, the morning and waking imagery -- as well as his rhetorical goal of arousing his neighbors/readers -- are prominent in the book; thus this epigraph sets the tone and mood.
